Gr. 3 Science update

We are currently in a Structures Science Unit. Yesterday we learned about the strength of different materials - paper ! We used manila tag paper, glossy paper, computer paper and aluminum foil for fun. We made a U shaped bridge and tested the bridge to see how many pennies (ie: load) each bridge could support. We learned manila tag paper held the most pennies. Students need to remember that in nature, animals such as birds use the right material with the necessary strength. So too, do humans. Engineers design structures with strength as one of the criteria.

Today students began to investigate in groups, the strength of shapes. We looked at circles, triangles, squares, octogons, etc.  Which shape will prove to be strongest??
