Merry Christmas from the Scienceroom

I want to take this time to thank all the students and their families for their Christmas gifts. It really is unnecessary, but Thank you for your gifts as well as your support this past year. I also want to thank the families who volunteered to take care of the science room animals over the Christmas holidays.

Once again I wish all the families at St. George a very blessed and Merry Christmas!!

Gr. 6 Electricity - Static Electricity

The grade 6 class have covered 2 lessons thus far learning about Static Electricity, or electricity that does not move very far. We are in the midst of Lesson 3 How can we use static electricity? where students will conduct 3 experiments using Static Electricity.  Then students will hand in one of the experiments and their results to be graded.

Gr. 4/5 and 5 Science update

Both classes began the new Gr. 5Science unit - Forces and Simple Machines. We started off by examining types of forces: contact and non-contact forces.

contact forces - push/pull, friction
non-contact forces - gravity, wind?

We then looked at balanced and unbalanced forces. We used tug of war as examples of balanced and unbalanced forces.

Gr. 3 Science update

We are currently in a Structures Science Unit. Yesterday we learned about the strength of different materials - paper ! We used manila tag paper, glossy paper, computer paper and aluminum foil for fun. We made a U shaped bridge and tested the bridge to see how many pennies (ie: load) each bridge could support. We learned manila tag paper held the most pennies. Students need to remember that in nature, animals such as birds use the right material with the necessary strength. So too, do humans. Engineers design structures with strength as one of the criteria.

Today students began to investigate in groups, the strength of shapes. We looked at circles, triangles, squares, octogons, etc.  Which shape will prove to be strongest??

Gr. 5 Health Decision Making/Nutrition unit test

As the Gr. 5 class has now completed the DecisionMaking/Nutrition unit, there will be a unit test on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. I handed out a study guide note yesterday. The unit test will focus mainly upon the topics covered after the Mid-Term test. We reviewed the topics of study that will be on the test: food labels; serving sizes; nutrients required by body; Bill Nye video Nutrients; Fast Food Know How.

Test Format:
5 True or False. General knowledge mainly on reading food labels and serving sizes.(ie: Q: Potato chips are in the "Other"food category. A: True!
9 Matching. Match the nutrients/vitamins body requires for growth with appropriate terms. *Focus on proteins, fats, calcium and vitamin C.
2 Short Answer. Explain what you learned in the Fast Food Know How worksheet. How would you change your eating habits from a fast food restaurant?

Good luck studying!

Grade 4/5 and 5 Science- new unit

The Grade 4/5 and 5 classes will both be starting the same new unit - Forces and Simple Machines. I think the classes will enjoy this unit.

Gr. 3 Science - new unit

The Grade 3 class will be starting a new unit - Structures and Materials.

Gr. 6 Science - new unit

The grade 6 class will be starting a new Science unit- Understanding Electricity.

Grade 5 Art: Grid Art

Grid Art is now due Tuesday, December 5. More than half of the class is complete, and their projects are hanging on the bulletin board hallway. I had asked some students to take them home this past weekend.

The students should be proud of their efforts!

Gr. 6 Science - First Nation's Perspective on plants, etc.

We learned today that plants have special significance to FN/Metis peoples as they used their place-based knowledge about plants for survival. Also, we learned today that Cree Elder Judy Bear feels that humans have created many problems for Mother Earth, and that human beings are the only living things that could be removed from the planet that would actually benefit Mother Earth. Something to consider.................

Gr. 5 Science Elements Project Due Date

We have had 4-5 classes to research and begin creating a creative presentation on the Element of student choice. Approximately 7 students have presented powerpoints, posters and one student even sang a song about their element!!

Students must now be ready to present on Wednesday, November 29.

Gr. 3 Science Unit Test: Plants

There will be a Science Unit Test on Plants on Friday, December 1. I sent a note home today (Thursday, November 23) outlining the test format and what topics students should focus on. While the test is comprehensive, most of the test questions focus on material covered after the Mid-Term test.

Good luck studying!

Gr. 4/5 Science Unit test: Light

There will be a  Science Unit Test on Light on Thursday, November 30. I sent a note home with students today (Thursday, Nov. 23) outlining the test format as well as sample questions, and topics should focus on. In addition there will be a bonus question worth 3 marks to the students that can correctly answer:

*Who invented the light bulb? How did this invention change the world?

Gr. 6 Science Unit Test: Diversity of Life

The Grade 6 class will be having a Science Diversity of Life unit test on Friday, December 1. I sent a note home today (Thursday, Nov. 23) to inform students and parents of the upcoming exam. On the note I outlined the test format, topics we have covered this term, and finally, topics should focus on. I provided a couple of sample questions as well.

Good luck studying!

Gr. 5 Health: Mid-term quiz

I sent home a note on Tuesday, Nov. 14 outlining a Gr. 5 Health Mid-term quiz on Friday, November 17.

Gr. 6 Science: Diversity of Life presentations

We will be finishing up Gr.6 Diversity of Life Presentations hopefully by Friday, Nov. 17. There are only a few students left to present. Students in the audience are required to jot down certain things during presentations: is it a plant or animal? What is its habitat? What adaptations does it have to survive?, etc.

Grl. 6 Health Mid -term quiz

I sent a note home on Tuesday, Nov. 14 outlining a Health Mid-Term quiz on Friday, Nov. 17. The unit is Body Image/Decision Making.

5 Drama

We are currently learning a play for the Christmas Season- Santa and the Mafiosa Mammas. There are enough roles for 20 students. Some students are designing the set and costumes while two students are directing the play.

I would like to rehearse using costumes. Therefore, I am asking students to bring costumes to school for our dress rehearsals. Please help your child find or make a simple costume:

police officers: white shirt, dark pants, police-looking vests, badges, etc.
Mafiosa Mammas: dresses, wigs, old purses, etc.
Mayor/Deputy Mayor: business suits/tie, briefcase, etc.
Mafia/gangsters: suits, ties, fedoras, etc.
elves: elf hat/santa toque, elf shoes, sweat pants, etc.

Thank you for your assistance!

5 Health - Reading Food Labels.

We are currently near the end of a Nutrition Unit. Last week students kept track of their eating habits for one week. Students were to then analyze their results with respect to eating enough vegetables and fruits. I am currently grading the, and expect to hand them back to students asap.

We are presently learning about how to read Food Labels on products.

Gr. 6 Science Diversity of Life Unit - Organism Project Due

Students are learning about the vast Diversity of Life on our planet. The Diversity of Life Research Project was due on Monday, October 30. Presentations began on that day. As organisms especially animals are very popular to research, most students created a powerpoint to effectively present their findings.
