Merry Christmas from the Scienceroom

I want to take this time to thank all the students and their families for their Christmas gifts. It really is unnecessary, but Thank you for your gifts as well as your support this past year. I also want to thank the families who volunteered to take care of the science room animals over the Christmas holidays.

Once again I wish all the families at St. George a very blessed and Merry Christmas!!

Gr. 6 Electricity - Static Electricity

The grade 6 class have covered 2 lessons thus far learning about Static Electricity, or electricity that does not move very far. We are in the midst of Lesson 3 How can we use static electricity? where students will conduct 3 experiments using Static Electricity.  Then students will hand in one of the experiments and their results to be graded.

Gr. 4/5 and 5 Science update

Both classes began the new Gr. 5Science unit - Forces and Simple Machines. We started off by examining types of forces: contact and non-contact forces.

contact forces - push/pull, friction
non-contact forces - gravity, wind?

We then looked at balanced and unbalanced forces. We used tug of war as examples of balanced and unbalanced forces.

Gr. 3 Science update

We are currently in a Structures Science Unit. Yesterday we learned about the strength of different materials - paper ! We used manila tag paper, glossy paper, computer paper and aluminum foil for fun. We made a U shaped bridge and tested the bridge to see how many pennies (ie: load) each bridge could support. We learned manila tag paper held the most pennies. Students need to remember that in nature, animals such as birds use the right material with the necessary strength. So too, do humans. Engineers design structures with strength as one of the criteria.

Today students began to investigate in groups, the strength of shapes. We looked at circles, triangles, squares, octogons, etc.  Which shape will prove to be strongest??

Gr. 5 Health Decision Making/Nutrition unit test

As the Gr. 5 class has now completed the DecisionMaking/Nutrition unit, there will be a unit test on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. I handed out a study guide note yesterday. The unit test will focus mainly upon the topics covered after the Mid-Term test. We reviewed the topics of study that will be on the test: food labels; serving sizes; nutrients required by body; Bill Nye video Nutrients; Fast Food Know How.

Test Format:
5 True or False. General knowledge mainly on reading food labels and serving sizes.(ie: Q: Potato chips are in the "Other"food category. A: True!
9 Matching. Match the nutrients/vitamins body requires for growth with appropriate terms. *Focus on proteins, fats, calcium and vitamin C.
2 Short Answer. Explain what you learned in the Fast Food Know How worksheet. How would you change your eating habits from a fast food restaurant?

Good luck studying!

Grade 4/5 and 5 Science- new unit

The Grade 4/5 and 5 classes will both be starting the same new unit - Forces and Simple Machines. I think the classes will enjoy this unit.

Gr. 3 Science - new unit

The Grade 3 class will be starting a new unit - Structures and Materials.

Gr. 6 Science - new unit

The grade 6 class will be starting a new Science unit- Understanding Electricity.

Grade 5 Art: Grid Art

Grid Art is now due Tuesday, December 5. More than half of the class is complete, and their projects are hanging on the bulletin board hallway. I had asked some students to take them home this past weekend.

The students should be proud of their efforts!
